Project: A100, replacement construction of the Westend bridge

The 243-metre-long Westend Bridge is located on the A 100 in a northerly direction between the Kaiserdamm Bridge and the Funkturm motorway junction and the Spandauer-Damm Bridge. The prestressed concrete structure with large span is one of the older large bridges built between 1950 and 1980 and is under special observation. The bridge is no longer able to cope with the volume of traffic and has to withstand a significantly higher load than originally planned during its development. A new replacement construction is necessary because the bridge cannot be renovated. DEGES was commissioned with this by the Senate Administration for the Environment, Traffic and Climate Protection.

Facts and figures

  • The first construction work for a replacement building will start in 2021 at the earliest
  • In preparation, the first construction measures took place in autumn 2017
  • Safety measures autumn 2017: seven steel structures in the area of the existing bridge piers (three in areas close to the track, four outside the areas close to the track) were installed together with measuring equipment
  • Construction height: superstructure of the Westend Bridge of 1.43m (slenderness 26.6)
  • Financing is provided by the Federal Government and the State of Berlin

Building Information Modeling

The Westend Bridge in Berlin was one of the first traffic projects in Germany to be planned using Open BIM. The design of the Westend Bridge is now being processed after completion of the preliminary planning. Based on the AIA and the associated BIM processing plan, planning is being carried out using the BIM method. In this project, role-based work will be carried out in a virtual project room and a digital approval process will be piloted with the Federal Ministry of Transport and the State of Berlin..

Successful project management with EPLASS:

The EPLASS BIM project platform is successfully used in BMVI BIM pilot projects. The A111 was built in sections between 1957 and 1987 as a new construction and now requires extensive maintenance measures. The Westend Bridge is the prelude to numerous rehabilitation measures and replacement new buildings in a highly dense inner-city environment.
