The Bibra Tunnel is located between the completed Saubach Viaduct, which is 248 metres long, and the Unstrut Viaduct (2,668 metres long, 50 meters high) by Karsdorf.

The Saubachtal Viaduct to the south serves as a construction road between the Finne Tunnel and the Bibra Tunnel. The 6,466-meter Bibra Tunnel is being constructed as a double-tube tunnel, as are all of the tunnels on this new section of line. The track centres in the two single-track tubes are 20 to 25 metres apart.

In addition, there are a variety of earthworks involved, including drainage and rainwater retention basins, and a road bridge before the east portal. The surplus material is being used for landscaping near the east portal, which saves transport miles.

The tubes of the tunnel are constructed as a double-skin vault structure of shotcrete with an inner skin of in-situ concrete. The two skins are separated by a plastic foil.

The excavation area is 86 square metres. Tunnelling of the two tubes starts simultaneously from the east portal to the west and from the west portal to the east.

Shotcrete is used on the walls as in mining.

Successful project collaboration with EPLASS:

Since EPLASS is already being successfully used for all the single projects of the German Unity Project No.8, it will also be used for the project organization of this subproject.

To facilitate the complex construction management in a central system, the project participants decided to work with the internet based project collaboration platform EPLASS. All processes are easily accessible for all project participants at any time and any place. Everything from the correspondence, to the construction reports, structural analysis, check reports and claims are organized, reviewed and archived within EPLASS. The project participants consists of the above named joint venture, the German Railway (DB AG), external designers, checking engineers, geotechnical engineers and the building inspection. The federal railway authority is also involved in this project.
