The new Erfurt-Halle/Leipzig line crosses the Scherkonde Valley north of the municipality of Krautheim in the Weimarer Land district.

The valley has a steep slope on its east side and a gently sloping west side. Two farm tracks and a hiking trail cross where the new line will be by the Scherkonde Viaduct. The Scherkonde flows through the valley, and the floor of the valley also contains the Großbrembach reservoir. The water level of the reservoir fluctuates greatly because it is used to store water for agricultural purposes. Around the water inlet there are large wetland areas that are flooded at high water. The Scherkonde Valley cuts into the undulating plane of the Thuringian Basin, which is used for a wide variety of different purposes. In addition to meadows with fruit trees, woodland areas, dry grasslands and wetlands, there is arable land on the slopes that adjoins large areas of arable land to the east and west.

Work on rerouting an overhead power line began in 2005. The prestressed concrete superstructure of the 576.50 metre long Scherkonde Viaduct was built section by section, starting at the abutments. The substructures, foundations, abutments and supports were built in advance of the superstructure. The superstructure was built using a launch girder.

Bridges of this size have so far only been built as integral structures. The static system selected represents something new thanks to its semi-integral supporting structure and opens up great scope for innovation in relation to the use of integral structures for Deutsche Bahn's viaducts. As a result of the reduced number of bearings, joints and costly inspection facilities compared with the usual prestressed concrete box girders, significantly lower maintenance costs are expected for this type of structure.

Successful project collaboration with EPLASS:

Since EPLASS is already being successfully used for all the single projects of the German Unity Project No.8, it will also be used for the project organization of this subproject.

To facilitate the complex construction management in a central system, the project participants decided to work with the internet based project collaboration platform EPLASS. All processes are easily accessible for all project participants at any time and any place. Everything from the correspondence, to the construction reports, structural analysis, check reports and claims are organized, reviewed and archived within EPLASS. The project participants consists of the above named joint venture, the German Railway (DB AG), external designers, checking engineers, geotechnical engineers and the building inspection. The federal railway authority is also involved in this project.
