The Saubach Viaduct crosses the Saubach Valley, which contains the Saubach and the B 176 road from Bad Bibra to Saubach.

Because the tunnel tubes on either side of the bridge (the Finne Tunnel in the west and the Bibra Tunnel in the east) are each for one track only, the distance between the track centres on the bridge is 20.00 m.

The substructure system consists of continuous girders across the entire length of the bridge. The superstructure cross-sections are two single-track hollow boxes in prestressed concrete. The supports taper as they get higher and are hollow. Deep foundations are required in the Middle Buntsandstein (coloured sandstone) for the supports in the valley floor. Supports, abutments and supporting walls on the slopes can have shallow foundations in the Buntsandstein. To suit the shape of the valley, the supports are spaced at intervals of 44 metres across the floor of the valley and at intervals of 37 metres and 35 meters at the two end spans. This results in a bridge length of 248 metres.

Successful project collaboration with EPLASS:

Since EPLASS is already being successfully used for all the single projects of the German Unity Project No.8, it will also be used for the project organization of this subproject.

To facilitate the complex construction management in a central system, the project participants decided to work with the internet based project collaboration platform EPLASS. All processes are easily accessible for all project participants at any time and any place. Everything from the correspondence, to the construction reports, structural analysis, check reports and claims are organized, reviewed and archived within EPLASS. The project participants consists of the above named joint venture, the German Railway (DB AG), external designers, checking engineers, geotechnical engineers and the building inspection. The federal railway authority is also involved in this project.
