Reorganization of the Stuttgart railway junction

This transport and urban development project aims to create three new passenger stations and 57 km of new lines. Of these, almost one third will be for the new high-speed line to Ulm. The existing terminal station will be converted into a through station and flexibly connected in all directions with a rail ring. Shorter journey times, more direct connections and capacity for more trains will create future-oriented mobility on rail.

Railway, federal government, state, city and region are participating in this major project together with the EU and the airport.

Facts and figures

  • Total route length: 57 km
  • of which high-speed route: 20 km
  • of which tunnels and culverts: 33 km
  • Number of tunnels and culverts: 16
  • Number of bridges: 18
  • Number of passenger stations: 3
  • Railway station: 1
  • Planned commissioning: December 2025
  • Speed: max. 250 km/h

The new line (NBS) Wendlingen-Ulm

Together with Stuttgart 21, the infrastructure designed for 250 km/h creates the basis for a more attractive travel times throughout Baden-Würrtemberg, Germany and Europe. The Filder area, with the airport and state fair, will also be ideally accessible by rail. Half of the 60 km long route leads through nine tunnels and follows the parallel A8 in close bundling. Around 40 railway and road overpasses will be built, including the two outstanding bridges over the Neckar near Wendlingen and over the Filstal near Mühlhausen im Täle. The construction of the new Wendlingen-Ulm line is a project of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan (Bundesverkehrswegeplan), co-financed by the EU.

Facts and figures

  • Total route length = 59.6 km - of which tunnel route = 30.4 km
  • Maximum line speed = 250 km/h
  • Tunnel (>500 m) = 5
  • Railway overpasses = 17
  • Road bridges = 20
  • Planned commissioning = December 2021

Total Project Cost: 7.7 billion euros

Successful DB major project Stuttgart-Ulm converts complete drawing management to EPLASS Professional

At the turn of the year 2014/2015, DB Projekt Stuttgart - Ulm GmbH converted the entire axial drawing management to EPLASS Professional. EPLASS replaces a paper-based system. The changeover during the ongoing planning operation was prepared over several months by a team of DB PSU employees as well as experts from DB International, THOST Projektmanagement and EPLASS GmbH.

All planning approval sections of the project defined their own, tailor-made workflows for their checking processes, which were subsequently implemented in EPLASS. From now on these workflows control the highly complex inspection processes fully automatically. Via the DOWEBA interface to the Federal Railway Authority included in EPLASS, planning documents are now transferred to the EBA with a qualified digital signature.

The EPLASS integrated checking options via so-called redlining and the omission of the postal route have significantly reduced the checking times. The possibilities of EPLASS deadline management according to individual inspection periods and milestones guarantee reliable information about the planning status for the planning managers and the deadline controllers as well as special reports for the management.

"What we like very much about the EPLASS system in terms of operation is the logical and comprehensible interface as well as the possibility of individually calling up and thus also being able to control every piece of information stored via own filters. EPLASS's advice and participation was always professional, motivated and highly focused". Dr. Florian Bitzer, Head of Technical Services (I.GT(T))"

"EPLASS was helping us to optimize the coordination of the planning and to fasten the approvals. It was definitely a key to master all the complex challenges of an inner-city grand project."
