More than 200 Mio Euros will be the total cost of the Blessberg tunnel project. It is the longest of 22 tunnels on the new Ebensfeld-Erfurt – Leipzig/Halle line. With its 8314 meters, the Blessberg Tunnel is the third longest, double tracked tunnel line in Germany (after the Landruecken Tunnel and the Muendener Tunnel). With a maximum depth of 330 meters below the surface, the tunnel crosses the 865 meter high Blessberg mountain in the Thuringian Forest.

The construction of the Blessberg Tunnel is being carried out within three lots. The first lot was the construction of the 965 meter drift. Within this drift the construction of the tunnel in the southern direction had been advanced. In this 4.6 km long southern part, the construction is being processed by the joint venture “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Tunnel Blessberg Süd” composed of the “Züblin AG”, “Strabag S.E.” and “Bickhardt Bau AG”.

The joint venture "Blessberg north" consisting of the companies “ Ed. Züblin AG” and “Bickhardt Bau AG” is responsible for lot 3, which is the construction of the northern part and the appropriate buildings like the Saubach Bridge, Goldberg Tunnel and Grubental viaduct.

The double tracked tunnel with a 126 sq meter cross-section area is being carried out by blasting processes. The following protection of the rock mass is being assured by several steel grate arcs on which concrete will be added.

Successful project collaboration with EPLASS:

The completion of the new construction sections Ebensfeld-Erfurt and Erfurt-Halle/Leipzig within the German Unity Transport project No. 8 is planned for 2017 with the assistance of the internet based project collaboration platform EPLASS. The project participants are, besides the German Railway (DB AG), also designers, checking engineers, geotechnical engineers and the federal railway authority. They are all using the project platform EPLASS Professional & Correspondence for the management of all processes. Hence, the entire correspondence, the construction reports, organizational documents, structural analysis, check reports and claims will all be organized, reviewed and archived within EPLASS. Via a special interface, the federal railway authority is also involved in the project.
