2nd main line Munich
The ‘2nd main line’ (Munich) is the core of the railway expansion planned by the Bavarian State Government in the Munich region. The construction of the ‘2nd main line’ is intended to relieve the bottleneck in the Munich S-Bahn system. This 2nd main line is a prerequisite for a better connection of the entire metropolitan region to Munich's city center and an essential prerequisite for a faster connection to Munich Airport.
In order to relieve the load on the existing main line, a second main line will be built on approximately ten kilometers between the Laim railway station in the west and Leuchtenbergring in the east. The centerpiece is a seven-kilometer-long tunnel connecting the main railway station and the Ostbahnhof (East Main Station).
The ‘2nd main line tunnel’ will have three new underground stations at the main station, Marienhof and Ostbahnhof. With the 3 new underground stations, the new main line will enable significantly shorter travel times. The introduction of an express S-Bahn system leads to attractive travel times between the surrounding countryside and the city.
Facts and figures:
Total length: approx. 11 km
Tunnel: about 7km
Depth: up to 48m
Stations: 5 (3 underground and 2 above ground)
Total costs: 3.8 billion euros including a risk buffer of 600 million euros

Successful project management with EPLASS:
The internet-based project platform EPLASS has been a reliable partner for DB Netz for many years when it comes to a complete digital planning and verification process (as required by the railway authority (EBA) DOWEBA) including signature stamping and interfaces to other programs.
The coordination of the plan review for this project is very complex due to the many participants and experts involved. EPLASS enables the project participants to work together effectively and compliant with its workflow based review processes and to support the implementation of this large infrastructure project. In different workflows, the planning bases, the implementation planning and the statics were digitally checked and released for construction.
In addition to the drawing management, the tendering and awarding is also handled workflow-based with EPLASS Professional. This ensures a structured and prompt processing of the tenders.
